Slots or Table games: who will win?

Casinos in Maryland came to the conclusion that slots are losing their popularity as younger generation spend more time at table games and there aren’t enough older players who can guarantee good profit. Because of this three casinos in Maryland – Hollywood Casino Perryville, Maryland Live, and Horseshoe Casino Baltimore got rid of 1,350 slots during the last 15 months, which is 16% of the total amount. The appeared free space will be used for more table games and other gaming facilities, as well as for the restaurants.

Situation in other states

The fall of the revenues from slot machines is noticed throughout the country and the number of them is reduced by the casinos. For example, in Nevada there were 217,000 slots in 2001 and only 175,000 in 2015. As a result, the revenues decreased in 20% between 2007 and 2014.

It is also supposed that the decrease in the amount of slots is connected with high taxes, which comprises 57-61%, in comparison to table games, which is only 20%.

However, MGM is planning to open its CA$12 billion Nation Harbor Casino with 3,600 slots and 140 table games within it.

Solution of the problem

One of the ways to fight the decline of slots’ popularity was found by Nevada’s governor, who issued a bill to create more interactive slot machines, as younger generation prefers this type of gaming machines. The new type of slots will require some skills from the play and not only luck. Some of the casinos are even planning to open special “gaming zones” to move away from the solitary slot experience.

Nevertheless, Maryland decided to follow a more old-fashioned way of increasing slots’ popularity. They bet on slots based on favorite TV series like “CSI”, “Game of Thrones”, “Sex and the City.” Maryland Live also launched Giant Jackpot of CA$100,000, which was won on May 31 in the amount of CA$97,797,57 on a 60-cent bet.
